In Russia trials are being conducted on 5G connection technology. Today, PJSC MTS (NYSE: MBT, MOEX: MTSS), the leading telecommunications operator in Russia, the CIS and Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) announced in a press release that a record-breaking speed of up to 25 Gbps was achieved on movable smartphone prototype. No other tests until now were carried out on movable devices.
These trials are part of the strategic partnership between MTS and Ericsson started in December 2015 with the purpose of developing and implementing 5G technologies in Russia.
To put things in perspective, this data transfer speed means that it would take just for 18 days to transfer the entire 2016 traffic experienced by MTS – this included downloading and streaming of movies, video calls, Internet surfing, media files download and transfer. The total volume of traffic that MTS subscribers transferred in the year 2016 was 1,206 Pb.
This is great news for the future of 5G network and for latest technologies on the market. Advances in 5G connection have all the potential to trigger the necessary change needed for a wider adoption of IoT, Industrial IoT as well as VR and AR.
A 5G connected future is getting closer and we cannot wait to see what it will unfold.
